Tow Bar Advice

Post by Hadleys Taxi » Thu Jun 04, 2020 2:59 pm

Afternoon All,

I am looking to fit a detachable tow bar to my 1.5 HR-V so that I can attach a small trailer to take gardening waste to the dump or fit a 2 bike tow ball bike rack.

I have never had one of these fitted and would appreciate any advice; 7 or 13 pin? Honda OEM or 3rd party? Also, anything to be aware of or avoid?

Many thanks.

Regards.

When I bought our car I did the same as we tow a caravan and use bikes, I looked at 3 fitting companies and they all said they needed to "trim" part of the CHASSIS to fit their one, which on a brand new HR-V sounded distinctly dodgy where warranty was concerned. I opted for the Honda fitted one to ensure there was no warranty issue.

Also had the 13 pin, but it turned out that the 12 volt fridge supply is not part of that (I got around that later) 13 pin is the better option, more secure, and industry standard. The detachable one we have works fine (we leave it on) with any tow arm or bike carrier, we use the Thule version so the number plate and lighting is legal.

Its this one https://www.thule.com/en-gb/bike-rack/t ... n-2-_-9502

Hope this helps

Many thanks.

Is there any coding required to let the car/ECU know there is s tow bar attached so that it will isolate the rear parking sensors and the extra load from the lighting board?

Not that I know of, the sensor only goes off if you select reverse while hooked up, the car will automatically adjust for the trailer, and if a bulb is out you will get a faster flash on the dash.

Afternoon All,

Just a couple of things that have been mulling around in my head.

1) Are detachable towbars slightly weaker or prone to more stress than a fixed tow bar?

2) With a detachable tow bar, just how accessable are they? Do you have to get on your hands and knees/get under the bumper to attach it?

3) If fitted correctly, if I were to leave the tow bars in place but with nothing attached, will they interfere with the operation of the rear parking sensor?

Many thanks,

Hi, I doubt that there is any difference in the strength of tow bars fixed or detachable, or there would be warnings to limit loads.

As to fitting / removal I find its easier for me to "get down" (but I have a dodgy shoulder) you may well be able to get one on and off without difficulty.

I leave mine on all the time and it has no effect on the sensors, and as a bonus acts as a deterrent in carparks to people parking too close.

Oh and you only forget its there once

Thank you, MartinLB, your responses have been extremely useful and informative.

I'm now beginning to wonder how Santa will get a tow bar down the chimney!!!!

Many thanks.
