Anyone towed a caravan with their auto HRV ?

Post by cb550 » Wed May 13, 2020 1:04 pm

Recently thought about buying a caravan for holidays and possibly holidaying abroad with, hence driving long distance.

Anyone any experience or opinions on the suitability of the Auto for towing a caravan. plus the extras/'bikes etc that would go with it.

Can't comment on the Auto but our 1.6 EX petrol manual tows ours fine, watch out for the towbar wiring as the 12volt fridge / battery cable is not part of the loom 13 or 7 pin versions. I got around that bu using the 15 amp accessory plug in the boot and ran the cable through the harness sleeve to the 13 pin socket.
Also watch the load limits if you're adding "extras"

hope this helps

I know nothing about towing caravans but I would note that the handbook for my 2016 HR-V the maximum towing weight for the petrol engine is 1000kg (I would expect the same to apply to other manufacturing years). This could well limit your options. The diesel HR-V is rated at 1400 kg towing weight so I presume the difference is due to the lower torque of the petrol engine.

Thanks Martin for sharing your experience towing with your manual petrol and also the tip for the second socket.

As John R pointed out from the handbook regarding the trailer weight limits, that might limit a little, the selection of 'vans available.

Thanks John for the advise, pointing to the tow weight figures from the handbook. Yes, would have thought the diesel is little heavier than the petrol car, so leaving the diesel engine probably the reason for the 40% increase in trailer tow weight.

CB550,

Our caravan is only 825KG so the weight match is good, and there are a lot of new light weight units out there now, they don't all have to be twin axle.monsters. We also manage to get around 40 mpg while towing too.

Thanks for the picture Martin. Yes, a lightweight unit which explains the good towing performance.

'Vans have moved on a bit since I last owned one (Lynton I think) with its cross ply tyres and single glazing. Yet it also had a wall mounted thermostat for its gas heating and 12v lights, gas fridge and wired for 240v for a hook up. I think it weighed approx. 17 1/2 hundred weight and I towed it with a peugeot 309 diesel. Car easily hauled it but it was definitely overladen.

Although ours is a 1989 model it comes with hot & cold water, toilet / washroom, 3 way fridge, 12v LED lighting & 240 ring main, and double glazed. Can be erected in the same time as boiling an egg. They are available in 2, 3, or 4 berth too :D

All British built Gobur from North Norfolk.
Have a look here
https://goburcaravans.co.uk
Sadly they no longer build new ones but they do have a good stock of second hand ones and a faithful following. Richard (the boss) helped us last year with the refurbish of the interior on ours, smashing chap. Not many companies out there that would offer help on a 30 year old anything let alone a caravan!
