recommended fuel grade for petrol HRV

Post by cb550 » Thu Feb 13, 2020 10:07 am

Our (first for us HRV) is coming next thursday, so just wondered what grade fuel you petrol car owners chose to run your cars with.

Our civic petrol, for our 5 years ownership only really ever used supermarket pumps standard octane. The car's given expected mpg returns, ran without issues and good emission results come mot time.

With the mk 1 Audi TT I run I've always used the premium fuel from wherever I've filled up from. Should the Honda need the same will do so :)

I've always used 95 octane fuel, usually from a supermarket. However, I also add a shot of Redex to the tank in case the cheaper fuel is short of cleaning additives. Redex is often on offer at Wilko (£2 for a bottle of 4 shots) which then works out at around 1.5p/litre of fuel.

I don't recall anyone in this forum doing a test with premium petrol but it's been tried by Jazz owners (there's discussion somewhere at https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php ) and the conclusion was that the premium fuel slightly improves the mpg but the margin isn't enough to justify the extra cost of the fuel.

Out of curiosity I had a look at the premium fuel and when we had a discount offer for supermarket fuel I tried it both solo and while towing the caravan, not an extensive test but as mentioned there was a small benefit from the premium, especially while towing, but I doubt the extra cost would be an economical option. Personally I only opt for it for towing when we have the discount.

Not sure about the redex though with all the sensors the engine has, it tends to burn a lot hotter.

Thanks Martin and John for the info' and recommendations.

Yes, redex used to be popular back in the day when de-cokes were normal practice due to what would probably be seen today as 'dirty' running engines.

Still good stuff. Might still have a litre tin somewhere in the garage (hope it's got a long shelve life !)

Back in my military days we would use OM15 (hydraulic oil) to clean the engines  made a lot of smoke for a a few minutes but really cleared the combustion chambers, worked best if injected direct via spark plug holes and left to soak overnight. :D

Oh and if you soak the engine don't forget to spin the engine over to expel any surplus redex BEFORE putting the plugs back in, once saw someone do that and it caused a hydraulic lock

Did'nt like to question, but the hydraulic lock phenomenon from delivering a quantity of fluid into the combustion chamber did occur to me. Bent con rods are not nice !

Would a little extra heat help with problems such as this https://www.hrvforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1184&sid=d84f947fd2cceb3936ef76e54263fcb7&start=10#p6694 ?
