Help newbie, road noise

Post by Pete hrv » Thu Sep 19, 2019 7:24 pm

Hi, just had my 67 plate HR-V for a week.
I love it and have done just under a thousand miles traveling on holiday in the last week.
One question though it seems quite noisy between about 40 and 65, above that it seems quite quiet. Noise comes from front end of car. I don’t think it is tyre noise as you can hear the change in noise from tyres as you go from nice new road surface to old road, on old road tyres quite noisy, new road little noise, but still droaning noise.
Not engine noise either I tried putting it neutral and coasting.
It is petrol and has the original Michelin tyres on about 4.5 mm tread depth.
Is this normal, anyone else experienced it?

Well took my HRV back to dealer to get a couple of minor niggles sorted.
They took it for a test drive and told me that all HRVs are quite noisy and that mine was fine.
Not sure I quite agree with them.
Guess I may have to find some similar models to test drive to see if they are a bit noisy.
Still loving it.

It is the i vetch petrol, with manual gearbox, January 2018.
Was doing some research online, seems the 2019 model has more sound proofing and top models get hi etc sound cancelling device!

Aside from tyre noise on certain surfaces I've found my HR-V to be quite quiet unless the engine gets revved (ie above about 3,000 rpm). I normally cruise along with the engine ticking over between 1500 and 2000 rpm when the tachometer is the best guide that the engine is running.

Tyre noise was the dominant noise source with the Primacy 3 being very noisy on concrete surfaces. However, these tyres were replaced earlier this year with Michelin Cross Climate+ tyres because I knew that they were less noisy and also slightly improve the ride. Improved winter grip is another attraction. See https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/our-cars/honda-hr-v/honda-hr-v-16idetec-now-up-to-4000-miles/ .

All these noises were nothing compared with the drumming of heavy rain a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks John, had been reading about the cross climate tyres.
I think I will go down that route when it is time to renew. My neighbor has them on a Peugeot 206 and thinks they are great.
Current Primacy 3 have just under 4 mm left, so maybe renew before winter kicks in here in highland Scotland.

If you want to know what could be done to improve the sound-proofing then read what someone did to a Jazz https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=11128.0 . (I don't know why this forum isn't recognising that as a link).

PS: Black Circles currently has an offer of £40 off a set of four Michelins.

Anyone want to buy a set of almost new 225/50 R18 Michelin Premacy 3 off my Honda HR-V 1.5S Turbo - less than 2000 miles? They are on eBay but open to offers as this 18" size seems to be only fitted to a few vehicles - make me an offer.
Replaced by 215/55 R18 Cross Climates as Michelin don't make a 225/50 R18.
Car is now much quieter and ready for any inclement weather!
